Info for skating school

Welcome to HSK’s skating school!

In this info we have collected things which are important to know when starting a hobby.

Operation

When you come to the skating school for the first time, sign up to coach in the ice rink lobby. You will receive a name tag and instructions on where to change your skates. The name tag must always be with the skater and visible during the skating session. Parents help their children to get on ice and walk with them to the border of the ice. The coaches will give children a permission to enter the ice and they will help them at the beginning.

Once the skaters have got on the ice parents must move to stands or to the end of the rink, away from the borders to follow the session. With this way the children will be able to focus on the group activities and learn skating.

Please note that the starting time of the skating school does mean the time when the session will be started on ice. It is good to come on time so the skaters can get into the action right from the start.

At the first session children are divided into groups based on their skating skill levels (yellow, red and green). You can see your own child’s group from the colored sticker on the name tag. Coaches will follow skaters’ development and if necessary, group changes and recommendations to development groups can be made during the season. Each child is an own individual and learns at his/her own pace.

If you have any questions about the operation generally or your own child’s skating please do not hesitate to contact the coaches right after the session.

Equipment

Skates

Skating school can be started with practice or hockey skates. However, learning is easier if you make an investment for high quality equipment. The well-being of growing feet is important. A good skating boot supports foot’s position and makes skating easier. Figure skating stores sell good skates for all ages. They also sell used skates which suit well for skaters in the skating school.

After the session dry the skates properly and put the fabric blade guards on the blade. Hard blade guards can also be dried by the towel. Important note! Put hard guards on skates just when walking to ensure good condition for your blades.

Clothing

In skating school dress to a flexible, warm and sport suitable clothing. For example a light jacket or fleece jacket and trousers are good clothes to skating school. You can wear something warm underneath according to your own needs. It is good to have a beanie or a headband on head and preferably gloves on hands. Practice clothing is good to separate from casual clothing. This way we take care together that the ice stays clean. We recommend using a helmet or safety headband.

Absence and session replacement

If a skating school skater is prevented from participating the skating school session due to illness, the skater can replace the missing session with another skating school group during the season. All skating school times can be found here. The other skating class for adults is in Salmisaari on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.) Please notify the reception that your child is coming to the replacement session before the session starts. If we need to cancel the session completely the skaters are entitled to replace their own session with other skating school session during the season, either before or after the cancellation.

Be prepared for changes in practice times

Skating school sessions may have to be cancelled or rescheduled during the season due to various events held at the rinks. This applies especially to Helsinki Ice Hall (Töölö) skating school. We will let you know about the cancellations in advance by email and in MyClub bulletins.

Due to events held at the Helsinki Ice Hall (Töölö), the parking lot can be full or paid. More information of the events can be found in the ice hall website.

Insurance

All skating school skaters under the age of 15 and who practice 1 – 2 times a week, HSK insures a “sporttiturva” insurance which is related to a skating school pass. This insurance is valid in skating schools organised by the member clubs of the Finnish Figure Skating Association (STTL). For the insurance the club must have the name of the insured, social security number and an address known. More information on “sporttiturva” insurance can be found on the Finnish Figure Skating Association’s website
